Surfing

In the waterFor: All levelsYear-round (best fall-winter)

Rosarito claims waves 365 days a year, and it isn't a slogan: the coast between town and La Misión packs some of the most consistent spots in northern Baja. To learn, head to the main beach in front of downtown: sand bottom, gentle waves most of the year, and surf schools working right on the sand. The Rosarito Beach Hotel runs lessons year-round together with the local surf school — private and group sessions, kids and adults — and everything you need is included: board, wetsuit and leash, plus a short theory intro before you paddle out.

Prices vary by season and by private vs. group, so confirm directly with the school; either way it runs well below what an equivalent lesson costs in San Diego, which is exactly why so many SoCal surfers learned here. If you already surf, your spots are south along the free road: breaks are named for the kilometer marker where they sit — K-38 and K-38.5 (the famous ones, point/reef breaks that work nearly year-round, about 24 miles south of the San Ysidro border), K-39 and Calafia point. They are rock-bottom breaks: wear booties, respect the locals, and scope your entry before jumping in.

The best conditions come with northwest swells in fall and winter, when crowds also thin out; that said, the Pacific here is cold all year (60-68°F), so a wetsuit is non-negotiable even in August. Mornings usually get better wind (offshore) than afternoons.

It's a perfect plan for beginners and for California surfers chasing uncrowded lineups; it's not for anyone expecting Cancún-warm water or trunks-only sessions.

Good to know

  • Waves all year; the best arrive with fall and winter NW swells
  • Lessons on the main beach (Rosarito Beach Hotel + local surf school) include board, wetsuit and leash — confirm current pricing with the school
  • Advanced spots: K-38, K-38.5, K-39 and Calafia, named for kilometer markers on the free road (~45 min south of the San Ysidro border)
  • K-38 and friends are rock-bottom breaks: booties recommended, and respect the local lineup
  • The water is cold year-round (60-68°F): always wetsuit, even in summer
  • Best wind in the morning; afternoons usually blow out
