Los Arenales: dune riding on ATVs & RZRs

AdventureFor: ModerateYear-round (skip summer midday)

About 15-20 minutes south of downtown Rosarito, at Cantamar and Primo Tapia (around km 46-47 on the free road, roughly an hour from the San Ysidro border), the coast turns into a field of sand dunes known as Los Arenales: the most accessible off-road playground in northern Baja and a spot locals have been riding for decades. The plan is simple: show up, and right at the dunes you'll find several rental outfits with quads, dirt bikes and RZR/UTVs — many operate through Facebook and Instagram, and dealing is direct and in cash.

As a reference, quad rental runs about $60 USD (around 1,500 MXN) per hour; two- and four-seat RZRs cost more and are worth reserving ahead (some operators ask for up to a week's notice), especially on weekends.

Saturdays and Sundays the place is a show in itself: local families, jeeps, sandrails, and plenty of off-roaders who trailer their own machines down from California — it's a longtime SoCal duner tradition. If you want the dunes quiet, go midweek or early morning.

Tips that matter: bring goggles and a bandana or buff (the sand flies, literally), sunscreen, cash in pesos or dollars, and check the machine before riding off — brakes, throttle, helmet included. Agree on time and price before you get on, ride sober, and assume insurance is minimal or nonexistent: prudence is your policy out here. Who is it for? Anyone who's done the beach quads and wants real terrain, groups of friends, and off-road fans. Who is it not for? Small kids behind the wheel, or anyone expecting a polished tour operation with an office and a contract: this is authentic Baja — informal and glorious.
