Villa Ortega's
If Puerto Nuevo is Baja's lobster capital, Villa Ortega's is one of its original temples: run by the Ortega family — the dynasty that turned this fishing village into a food destination decades ago — and perched right on the cliff, with a terrace hanging over the Pacific. The recipe hasn't changed and it's exactly what you cross the border for: local lobster split in half, flash-fried in lard, served with rice, refried beans and warm handmade flour tortillas that keep coming in dangerous quantities.
Price depends on lobster size and season — plan on roughly $30-50 per person for a full lobster meal, and dollars are the default currency in Puerto Nuevo — with fish and shrimp options for the non-lobster crowd; the grill-for-two with complimentary lobster burritos shows up in recent reviews as the winning order, and the tortilla soup has its own fan club.
The vibe is weekend family fiesta: mariachis working the tables, big groups celebrating, and a view that does half the work, especially at sunset. Open daily from mid-morning to evening. Getting there: about 50-55 minutes from the San Ysidro border — take the free road (carretera libre) south past Rosarito and exit at Puerto Nuevo around Km 44 (the village itself is worth the stroll and has its own guide in our nearby-places section); the restaurant sits at the ocean end of Barracuda street.
Two practical tips confirmed by recent visitors: bring cash, since cards aren't accepted, and hold out for a cliff-terrace table even if it means a short wait — it's the difference between eating lobster and eating lobster with the Pacific crashing below. 2025 reviews remain mostly positive, with the usual honest Puerto Nuevo caveat: on packed days the kitchen can slip.
