K-38, Rosarito, Baja California

K-38

Surf spotLevel: IntermediateYear-round (best on S and W swells)

K-38 is the most iconic surf spot in Rosarito and one of the first that anyone heading into Baja California tries. It is named after kilometer 38 of the old Tijuana-Ensenada free road. It is a right-hand point break, moderately powerful and with a bowly section, that breaks over a rocky bottom and delivers long, consistent waves —sometimes up to 180–200 meters of ride.

Its fame comes from being almost always surfable: it picks up south and west swells, works at sizes from 1.5 to 3 meters and goes offshore with northeast winds. It's at its best on low to mid tide. When it gets big, it gets really good.

Because it is so well known and accessible —people drive down from San Diego for the day— it tends to get crowded, especially on weekends. It is not a single peak but a neighborhood of breaks with distinct personalities; read the line-up and respect the locals before paddling out.

The bottom is rock, so booties and care getting in and out are recommended. The zone is flanked by cliffs with hotels and restaurants, which also makes it a great place to sit and watch the surf with the ocean in front of you.

Great for

  • Intermediate surfers
  • Long right-hand sessions
  • Watching the surf with an ocean view

Amenities & vibe

  • Clifftop hotels and resorts (Las Rocas area)
  • Surfer motels and restaurants overlooking the break
  • Parking and reef access points

The peaks

🌊 The Point

The main peak: the long, classic right-hander that gives the longest rides.

🌊 The Left

The set’s left, a good alternative when The Point is crowded.

🌊 Maria's

The friendliest peak, breaks consistently and is the most beginner-suitable.

🌊 Theresa's (El Morro)

The most aggressive, almost always a shortboard wave; called El Morro after the restaurant across from it.

Good to know

  • Rocky bottom: wear booties and take care getting in and out.
  • It fills up on weekends; respect the line-up order and the locals.
  • Not for absolute beginners; to start out, "Maria's" or the downtown beach are better.

Other beaches & spots

Each is a separate beach, spread north and south of downtown along the scenic road.
